CPL is one of the most frustrating conditions for horse owners. You see your horse\u2019s legs changing, getting thicker, feeling hard or developing scabs\u2026 and no matter how carefully you keep them dry, wash or care for them: it never really seems to improve.<\/p>\n

What is CPL in horses?<\/strong><\/p>\n

CPL stands for Chronic Progressive Lymphedema. It\u2019s a condition in which the lymphatic vessels no longer function properly, causing waste products to remain in the lower leg. This leads to:<\/p>\n

    Thick, hard legs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Swelling around the fetlock<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Crust formation (sometimes deep cracks)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Sometimes pain or lameness<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    It occurs mainly in breeds with a lot of feathering, such as Friesians, Cobs and draft horses, but it can develop in any horse.<\/p>\n

    How does CPL develop?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    CPL doesn\u2019t appear overnight. It\u2019s a process that has usually been going on for quite some time, often a combination of:<\/p>\n

      An overloaded lymphatic system<\/strong>
      The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste products.
      When it slows down, the lower leg starts to \u201cfill up\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      Chronic stress on the skin<\/strong>
      Think of mud, rubbing, mites, mud fever or a weakened skin barrier.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      Connective tissue losing its elasticity<\/strong>
      This makes it harder for fluid to drain away, which further increases the pressure in the lower legs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    4. \n

      Hereditary predisposition<\/strong>
      Some breeds are simply more prone to it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      So CPL is not just a skin problem; it\u2019s a combination of skin, connective tissue and a disrupted lymphatic system.<\/p>\n

      How do you recognize CPL at an early stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Many owners only notice it once the symptoms are clearly visible, but CPL often announces itself more subtly:<\/p>\n

        Small scabs in the hollow of the fetlock<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          Movement stimulates blood flow and lymph flow.
          Lots of standing still = more swelling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          Good skin care<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Regularly check for scabs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            Don\u2019t use aggressive products<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            For horses with feathering: trim in time to let air reach the skin<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

            Adjust management<\/strong><\/p>\n

              As much turnout as possible<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

              Dry, clean footing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

              A diet low in sugars<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
